UK singer-songwriter and musician James Billett has released his new track ‘What Will They Say About Us’ with support from Black Minds Matter UK, an organisation who want to provide free mental health support for black people.
In a year with #BlackLivesMatter and #MeTooMovement filling all forms of media as several injustices come to light ‘What Will They Say About Us’ is the social anthem for a generation just as Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young’s ‘Ohio’ was all those years ago.
Billett’s voice is easy on the ear and emotional at the same time as he sings “All I see/Is ignorance breeding/Superior believing.” If you enjoy the music of Badly Drawn Boy especially his work on the soundtrack for “All About A Boy” where a song tells a story then this song might be up your street.
To summarise, James Billett has written a song that informs the listener that we are stuck in a pattern of mistakes that we cannot help but repeat. However, one of the reasons we study history is so that we can learn from the mistakes of the past to improve the future which is why protest songs such as this are so important.
