The music of Astral Swans is a spellbinding portal into the psyche of acclaimed Canadian songwriter Matthew Swann. In 2017, Swann entered the studio with Preoccupations guitarist Scott Munro, recording engineer Paul Chirka of the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, and Dan Mangan to create the songs that would become his sophomore album, Strange Prison. Packed with swooning strings, shimmering keys, and spectral electronics, it demonstrated Astral Swans‘ philosophical searching with both morbid humour and compassionate character studies.
New single, “Bird Songs,” is about self-sabotage … about keeping someone really wonderful at arms’ length out of fear, self-protection, mental illness, and selfishness.
Due to the ongoing revelations of harrowing injustice and systemic racism against BIPOC throughout North America, all Bandcamp sales of “Bird Songs” will be donated to Awo Taan Healing Lodge Society based in Swann‘s hometown of Calgary, AB. Awo Taan (which means shield in the Blackfoot language) provides community services based in Native traditional teachings to anyone affected by family violence and abuse. Astral Swans will also match all donations generated through sales up to $250.
