If you were active in the New York City music scene in the late 1970’s and into the 1980’s, you may be familiar with Norman Zamcheck, who back then was part of a duo called Stormin’ Norman & Suzy, which was referred to by the New York Times as the “hottest act in town, ” unleashing a deluge of media attention. He’s accomplished a lot in his 4 decade career, including, but not limited to, playing at Carnegie Hall (twice), recording for the Polydor/Polygram label, written scores for several movies and off-Broadway shows, appeared on a Dick Clark TV Special, and worked as composer and music director for Pilobolous Dance Theater. He’s even performed internationally, touring with the Andy Statman Klezmer Orchestra, playing to appreciative crowds in Poland, Israel and Brooklyn.

Norm has a new jazz orchestra group called Real Stormin’ Norman, with a big New Orleans Jazz style and sounds reminiscent of Frank Zappa and Randy Newman. Real Stormin Norman features Norman on the piano, who also writes the music, and Genevieve Faivre, who lends her soulful vocals, both backed by a jazz orchestration.

They recently released their newest jazz album, Euphoria, which channels everything from Norman’s career as a composer and musician. It features varied genres, though all piano based, with blues, jazz, Latin, and the sounds of New Orleans. The 6 song album is a passionate collection of jazzy lounge style of music, harkening us back to a simpler, yet more sophisticated time. Norms piano playing is beyond genius, and his writing is kind of storytelling you don’t see as often anymore. The piano riffs in each song builds onto the the trumpets and drums.

Listen to Euphoria here:

“For me It’s all about the magic of the piano keyboard & its infinite possibilities; all about the amazing melodies that can spin up from chords and rhythms, all about the countless stories that need to be sung, all about the pure magic, the colors and shading great musicians add to a song, and most important, the soul and spirit of a great singer,” says Norman. “I am thrilled to be able to offer Euphoria, and am already planning our next release.”
