American folk singer and songwriter Randie O´Neill has released a brand new single ¨Queen of the Barstool Two-Step”. This is the first release from her forthcoming album “Full Moon Rising” out in May, 2022.
This is a really honest song with a catchy chorus and full of Americana folk charm. With a sound similar to Dolly Parton perhaps, O´Neill manages to weave melancholic lyrics with a more upbeat guitar sound. The melody is catchy, and the lyrics are easy to follow and sing along to. Influences include Melissa Etheridge, Fleetwood Mac and Cyndi Lauper.
The theme of the song, however, is a little more dark:
“‘Queen’ is actually a sad song about a lonely individual who just doesn’t want to be alone,” shares Randie. “They get dressed up and try to look their best and hope they don’t end up alone. They also know that it’s not true love but just alone in a crowd. It’s a covid song in that for lonely people, covid was even lonelier because there was no chance at connection.”
In fact, ¨Queen (of the Barstool Two Step)” is a song written during the Covid pandemic, when O´Neill was able to reflect not only on her music, but also her life. She has stated that she was able to take a step back and look at emotions and feelings that had not come up before.
O´Neill draws on a lot of her own experience, as a child, growing up in an abusive and alcoholic environment, she had to develop coping strategies. Now, O´Neill brings this experience to bring the listener a message of compassion, hope and understanding.
