Michael P Cullen & the Soul Searchers is an alternative rock band from Sydney, Australia that consists of Michael P Cullen (vocals. Guitar), Tim Powles (drums, percussion, vocals), Andy Sharpe (bass), James Harland-Wright (guitar), and Craig Wilson (keyboards, vocals).

With their newest and third singe, “Black Coffee and Cigarettes”, from their forthcoming Live at Lazybones EP, the track gives off an alt country, classic rock, and punk western feel.

Unlike the original version of the song that’s featured on Michael P Cullen’s album True Believer, this one was recorded live in Sydney with the Soul Searchers at the Lazybones Lounge in Marrickville. Listening to the “Black Coffee and Cigarettes”, we can’t help but think of R.E.M.‘s 1991 track “Losing My Religion” due to it’s classic rock sound.

According to Michael, “Black Coffee is the closest I have ever come to country … but as you probably already know I hit the guitar a bit too hard to ever make it in Nashville and I can’t sing nearly sweet enough nonetheless that twang is there and it sure is a song of regret and missed opportunities.”
