What really is indie music? It’s something I question whenever I write for this lovely little blog of ours and it seems like just about every genre can be connected to this umbrella term. After thinking on it for some time, I reckon that indie music is anything that challenges the status quo, that steps over the line, that takes a new direction. That’s why I think we can welcome Maie to the indie crew. For starters, she’s a virtual artist, something that I’m told is a little more common in China and other East Asian countries than it might be in the rest of the world, but even in that little world, Maie stands out. She’s not giving you the fantasy, in fact her songs are more about the human experience.

For example when Maie talks about her newest single ‘Kosmo’, she says that “I choose to discover what it means to be human. I’d do anything to be here, where I want to belong.” But then she flips the script, “I can travel to places normal people can’t. Visit worlds most people can only dream of.”

With the help some very talented illustrators and animators, we get to peak inside Maie’s dream-like worlds – some are serene and calming, others are dangerous and threatening, and then some look just like the world I’m in right now. It’s a super interesting concept and thanks to songwriter and producer Pete Nappi, we can hear directly what Maie’s experience is really like.
