Growing up in a music-filled household in Youngstown, Ohio, Kristen Mather De Andrade had music running through her veins at a young age. Kristen’s passion, determination and innate talent paved her road to success in competitions, giving her the opportunity to perform with regional symphonies. She went on to receive her Bachelor’s degree in Music (Clarinet Performance) from Youngstown State University before beginning her pursuit of a Master of Music in Clarinet Performance at DePaul University in Chicago. Her academic career was interrupted when she was offered a full-time, prestigious position with the West Point Band in 2007. In 2016, Kristen earned her Master of Arts in Education from Columbia University. She also produced her full-length debut album, Clarão (meaning flash of light in Portuguese), after playing a program of Brazilian music on a livestream. In addition to these successes, Kristen is also the artistic director, clarinetist and co-founder of Vent Nouveau, a New York City ensemble that records and performs material for a mixed instrumentation group called the Quintette 7. In 2021, she earned the title of principal clarinetist and soloist at West Point.
Kristen’s new single, Sagrado, is a mid-tempo song that will have listeners on their feet. This danceable, Portuguese song showcases the harmonica, clarinet, drums, guitar, maracas and cello. Accompanied by her beautiful vocals, Kristen produces a rhythm that transports the listener to a summer day in Brazil. Drawing influence from Brazilian composers such as Rubens Leal Brito, Severino Araújo, and Roque Ferreira, the single, Sagrado (which translates to Sacred), has a culturally rich sound that many will come to love.
Although Kristen is a New York based artist, she immerses herself with a broad selection of music ranging from classical cannon to world music and much more. Having always been an admirer of music from Brazil, and having a Brazilian husband, the single Sagrado takes on special meaning. She writes, “I loved recording this piece… the melody is simple and the lyrics incredibly expressive.” Kristen produced a simple and poetic single that will have everyone dancing the summer away.
Kristen Mather de Andrade is currently a faculty member at Manhattanville College where she teaches saxophone and clarinet. She is currently preparing for the release of her sophomore album which will feature global composition. Fans are anxious to see the artistic and brilliant Clarão (flash of light) Kristen will grace us with next.
