Keegan Powell is a Toronto-based songwriter and performing artist combining elements of psychedelic rock with alternative folk, brit pop, and shoe-gaze to create something completely his own. His debut solo LP, Previous Pain, features production credits from Matt Snell (Dua Lipa), Peter Van Helvoort (The Glorious Sons), Dylan Frankland (Tallies), and Phil Jones (from Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers).

Informing imagery of a militaristic march, “World Awake” was inspired by Dalton Trumbo’s Johnny Got His Gun. Powell explains, “The arc of the story and the ultimate fate of Joe, a severely wounded soldier who gets carted around inside a glass box for everyone to see his deranged fate, represents a kind of claustrophobia I can relate to. We all have our own glass box of sorts and the moment in which we penetrate through it can be a real moment of clarity.”

Powell continues, “I didn’t let my pain beat me to the punch. I didn’t want to be afraid of it and let my mental idiosyncrasies boss me around; I ran right into it headfirst. I took a hold of it like I was etching a sculpture. I realized control is the hardest thing to grasp in one’s life. It will scab your skin and your hands will bleed, but you will have a better grip on yourself after. That’s what Previous Pain is to me. I have a grip now.”
