Having just released their brilliant new single ‘Gaslight’ we decided to check in with The Barnum Meserve and chat all about their new release.

Indie Music Magazine: Hey, thank you for joining us today. Could you please tell any of our readers that haven’t heard about you yet what you’re all about?

The Barnum Meserve: Hey, we’re called The Barnum Meserve. We’re a 3 piece band from Nottingham. While it’s a little hard to describe the music, I’d say we’re slightly alt./indie rock orientated but with big swaths of cinematic string and brass included (with a dash of electronics also).

Indie Music Magazine: Congrats on your new release. How are you feeling about this right now?

The Barnum Meserve: We’re very pleased it’s finally out! Gaslight is one of the songs from our yet to be announced album which technically has been in development for the past 5-7 years. Several of those years were spent writing and we did originally plan on releasing the album in 2020 but then as I’m sure you can guess…the world changed! Having an additional 2 years to tinker has been great though as we’ve had the opportunity to streamline the album down as well as have an abundance of time to mix and master it to its highest quality.

Indie Music Magazine: Could you talk to us about the process you have made as an artist to get to this point?

The Barnum Meserve: Well, we’ve been around for quite a while now. I wouldn’t say we’ve ever belonged to a ‘scene’ as such but that’s been ok with us. Originally Leon and Dylan played together in a band out of College. We shared rehearsal rooms with another band Mossy was in. After both those bands had run their course we decided to try it as a three piece not really knowing what direction we wanted to go in other than dropping the guitar element (Leon was previously the singer/guitarist in the former band) and introducing piano and strings but at the same time not losing the ferocity of ‘rock’ we’d all grown up on. We’ve released 2 albums prior to Gaslight so it’s definitely been a growing experience from a creative angle. Each album has been us finding our feet and focusing our sound more.

Indie Music Magazine: We’re loving the single artwork. Could you please explain the meaning behind this?

The Barnum Meserve: We can’t take any credit for the artwork or video to be honest! This was all from Fraser West @ WeTheConsipritors. We’ve been working with Fraser since our second album and cannot be happier with what he creates. The artwork does feature the actor Micheal Muyunda who was stellar in the video for Gaslight,

Indie Music Magazine: If you had to describe your sound in 3 words which, would you pick?

The Barnum Meserve: hmmmm…cinematic, dramatic…loud?

Indie Music Magazine: Was the process in creating this single different to the other music you have released?

The Barnum Meserve: Gaslights pretty left field for us as it’s quite a departure from some of the previous songs we’ve released. Leon had written in at home while we were finalising the track list for the album. He was adamant that it should be included and as we were still in the studio at the time (and all loved the song) we had to include it. It definitely has more of a trip-hop vibe to it which we’ve never explored previously (but are huge fans of artists such as Portishead). There’s more of a minimalist vibe also to the song. Quite a few of our songs in short have ‘a lot going on’ whereas Gaslight strips back along and keeps things simple sonically.

Indie Music Magazine: Has listening to any other artist throughout your youth inspired this record?

The Barnum Meserve: There’s definitely hints of it but I think it’s a mix of a lot of the recent music the past few years we’ve been listening to. The three of us have quite a varied taste in music but I think that’s what’s great about our sound in that it’s kind of hard at times to pinpoint it. I think we’d all very much prefer to sound original than like another band!

Indie Music Magazine: What can we expect to see from you in the future?

The Barnum Meserve: Another single and amazing video from Fraser West then the album release!

Indie Music Magazine: Thanks again for joining us today. Any last comments you would like to mention to fans?

The Barnum Meserve: Thanks for the interview and cheers to everyone who’s checked out Gaslight, we really appreciate it!
