Indie-Music.com is a destination for independent musicians.
The community-based system attracts
vocal supporters from the music industry, media, and music fan
segments. Both amateur and veteran musicians regularly log on
to Indie-Music.com for the latest news, CD reviews, articles,
and contact directory updates. Thousands subscribe to the twice-monthly
Indie-Music.com Indie News tip sheet.
Indie-Music.com's success is
rooted in core knowledge of its customers. They didn't start out
as a "dot.com". Instead, they started back in the 80's
as musicians and engineers, experiencing the music industry first
hand, sometimes learning the hard way.
In 1996, a conjunction of events
occurred -
- The Internet appeared in general society
for the first time, allowing quantum leaps in information sharing.
- The price of recording a CD became affordable
for average musicians.
- Musicians discovered the web as a huge
promotional tool.
- Major recording label consolidation created
a stale market in hit music.
- Technology was introduced to transmit
music files digitally in sonically acceptable form, allowing
independent artists a chance to avoid the middleman and sell
directly to the consumer - music fans.
Meanwhile, back in Indiana, Indie-Music.com
founder Suzanne Glass had also discovered the Internet. She eagerly
began using it as a research tool to advance her music career,
and began amassing a great collection of bookmarks. She got a
free homepage and posted the links, along with articles she had
recently begun to write about the music industry. Enmeshed in
her career as a music professional offline, Glass considered the
website a fun project.
As musicians discovered Indie-Music.com,
a large collection of independent bands, record labels, studios,
venues, and more were added to the site's database, always screened
by Glass, who used it as her personal contact list. This created
unique and original content not available elsewhere. Empowered
by the digital age, musicians were thrilled to find the information.
Working in a strictly grassroots
manner, Glass and Vice President Paul Bultman, expanded the site
from 5 pages in 1996 to thousands of pages today. More than 7,000
bands are registered with Indie-Music.com, and over 17,000 subscribe
to the twice monthly email newsletter. Dozens of independent CDs
are reviewed each month in our online Magazine.
In 2002, Indie-Music.com began offering paid Membership
Subscription accounts offering premium access to an extensive
music industry database, plus other features designed to make
the life of musicians easier.
In 2005, Indie-Music began featuring
streaming audio and video from our members, including stations,
charts, and editorial presentation of the best new music. The
company also earns revenue through advertising, product sales,
and additional services.
